Reno, Nev.-based utility posts $44.8 million loss for second quarter.

Aug. 10--Sierra Pacific Resources, the parent company of Nevada Power Co., lost $44.8 million in the second quarter, down from a $216.3 million loss a year ago, officials reported Monday.
"While the loss is disappointing, we are pleased to report that results from our combined utility operations showed continuing improvement," Walt Higgins, chairman and chief executive officer, said in a statement.
The loss per share decreased to 38 cents from $1.85 in the same period last year.
The loss from continuing operations was $40.9 million, or 35 cents a share, down from $188.3 million, or $1.61 a share in the period last year.
