Officials work to protect St. Lawrence, N.Y., hydro power.

Aug. 11--ALBANY, N.Y. -- Eleventh-hour negotiations are under way to save legislation that would ensure St. Lawrence-FDR Power Project electricity remains in the north country.

However, a key player in those talks is running out of hope they'll be successful.

"We'll have to walk away from the issue this year, and take it up again next year," said state Sen. James W. Wright, R-Watertown, who co-sponsored the legislation that the Senate passed in June.

The measure, which is now stalled in the Assembly's energy committee, would require the New York Power Authority to keep available 490 megawatts of hydropower generated by the St. Lawrence project...
