Aug. 8--DAYTON, Ohio -- In late October, checking accounts will change quietly but significantly and bank customers will see their money zip away faster.

The Check Clearing for the 21st Century Act, called "Check 21," will take effect Oct. 28. At that point, banks no longer must return canceled checks to checking account holders. Instead they can issue "substitute checks" which are legal electronic images of both sides of a check.

Also, because more electronics now are used in check processing, money to pay a check can be pulled quickly from your checking account. That can mean less float or hang time to deposit money to cover a check.
