Aug. 10--Under fire in Vietnam, Sam Leslie said he begged God: Just let me get out alive. Upon returning home, the former Marine infantryman looked for a way to repay the Lord.
In 1997, he found it: Leslie invested $100,000 in an affiliate of the Anderson-based Church of God. Proceeds from the investments, he was told, would go toward loans to build churches.
"I felt like I was doing the right thing in my heart and soul," the retired Anderson foundry worker said in a court affidavit. "I never dreamed it would end like this."
