RealNetworks's online music store to charge half as much as Apple's iTunes.

Aug. 18--RealNetworks is trying to take a bite out of Apple.

The Seattle-based provider of digital media software and services, yesterday cut the cost of singles and albums on its online music store to 49 cents and $4.99, respectively -- half as much as what the market leader, Apple's iTunes Music Store, charges for each.

The move comes about three weeks after RealNetworks said it had developed technology allowing songs from its service to be played on Apple's popular iPod digital music player. Apple's proprietary digital-rights management technology, called FairPlay, prohibits iTunes-purchased songs from being played on non-iPod players, and the company has not...
