Bombay Co. cuts back on number of planned stores.

Aug. 20--FORT WORTH, Texas -- The Bombay Co., aiming to recover from another disappointing quarter, will open 10 fewer stores than planned this year. The lighter opening schedule will free up money and time for the upcoming holiday shopping season, allowing executives to focus on increasing sales at existing stores, the chain said.
The delays mainly affect locations that the retailer had planned as "fill-in" stores in metropolitan markets where Bombay is already positioned. The company said it will maintain its strategy of relocating stores from traditional enclosed malls to strip centers, and will end 2004 with 29 to 34 more stores than it had at the start of...
