Aetna has deal to buy benefits provider in Columbia, S.C.

Aug. 21--Aetna Inc., seeking to add new customers, said Friday it is acquiring a company that provides medical and other benefits to part-time and hourly workers.

Aetna said its $250 million purchase of Columbia, S.C.-based Strategic Resources Co. builds on another acquisition last December that allowed the Hartford-based health insurer to offer health coverage to students.

"We now will be able to offer another segment of the uninsured population -- part-time and hourly workers -- access to health and preventive care," Aetna senior vice president Tim Brown said, in a release.
