U.K. electronics group Laird makes deal for cellphone-antennae maker Centurion.

Aug. 24--It was out with the old and in with the new at electronics group Laird as it cemented its place in the mobile telephony market.

In a hectic day of wheelerdealing, the group agreed to pay UKpound 106.8 million for Centurion Wireless Technologies, which makes antennae used in mobile phones. It will recoup some of that cash by selling its plastics business to Blackfriars, a private US company, for UKpound 35.7 million.

Centurion customers include Samsung and Sony Ericsson and Laird already counts Nokia and Motorola among its clients.

This latest buy catapults Laird into joint first place in the world antennae market -- putting it neck and neck with UK rival Filtronic....
