British clothing retailer Matalan's struggles to win back shoppers.

Aug. 26--John King has made a special effort to dress up. Instead of his usual UKpound 65 suit, the chief executive of clothing retailer Matalan is wearing an UKpound 80 soft wool and cashmere number. King says: "It's only because I forgot to wash the other one." He adds: "This would be UKpound 200 in Marks & Spencer."

This is typical of King, an unassuming man who does not stand on ceremony. Unlike some of his rivals, the 42-year-old would not dream of wearing a UKpound 1,000 Savile Row suit while extolling the benefits of Matalan's cut-price clothes.
