Sep. 1--It remains to be seen whether HBOS, the Halifax-Bank of Scotland group, will seek to buy Abbey National, but the prospect that it might has caused some odd thoughts on how the Competition Commission should react in the event of such a bid.
In particular, it is widely put about that if there were a lengthy competition inquiry, the uncertainty would undermine the Abbey National business, demoralise staff and customers and leave it severely weakened.
Comparisons are drawn with Safeway and the alleged weakening of that business in the 12-month limbo it endured waiting for the Morrison's supermarkets chain to be cleared to bid for it. The implication is...
