Microsoft launches online music service to rival Apple's iTunes.

Sep. 3--In yet another battle of Microsoft versus Apple, the world's largest software maker yesterday launched an online music service that will try to usurp the iTunes Music Store's position at the top of the digital music downloading heap.

MSN Music went live yesterday in "beta" mode (http://beta.music.msn.com), allowing Microsoft to work out any bugs before its official launch, expected next month. In the meantime, users will be able to download songs for 99 cents - the same price as Apple's iTunes - and select from a catalog of about 500,000 titles.
