Thai cellular operator opens battleground in low-end segment.

Sep. 3--Rapid sales growth in its low-end customer segment has prompted cellular operator Advanced Info Service (AIS) to push further into the untapped grass-roots market in rural areas this year to retain the current size of its subscriber base.

About 3.7 million people have signed up for the company's Sawasdee prepaid service since its inception in mid-May, bringing its total prepaid subscribers to exceed 13 million.

As of June 30, AIS had approximately 15.1 million subscribers, representing a 58 percent share in the country's mobile phone market. The company gained a total of 2.8 million new subscribers in the first half of the year.
