Lowell, Mass.-based maker of solar cells acquires Siemens division.

Sep. 7--LOWELL, Mass. -- Konarka Technologies has acquired its largest competitor in a move that is expected to accelerate the commercialization process of its solar cells.

The Boott Mill-based startup announced Tuesday the purchase of Siemens AG's organic photovoltaic research activities for an undisclosed amount.

"This really unites the two major efforts in the technology space, bringing in additional personnel at a very high level," said Daniel Patrick McGahn, Konarka's executive vice president of operations, manufacturing and engineering.
