Abu Dhabi-based carrier to order 5 jets from Boeing.

Sep. 11--Boeing scored a modest but strategically significant victory in the Middle East yesterday when it announced that Etihad Airways intends to order five 777-300ER wide-body jets.

A final contract with the Abu Dhabi-based carrier has not been signed, but a Boeing spokesman said the company expects to conclude detailed negotiations in the next four to six weeks.

The 777-300ER is Boeing's newest and most expensive jet, with a catalog price of $218 million to $245.5 million. The Etihad order could be worth more than $1.2 billion at those prices, although discounts on large orders are routine.
