Gastonia, N.C., automotive supplier to stop operations, lay off 200.

Sep. 14--GASTONIA, N.C. -- A Gastonia company that supplies rebuilt transmissions to General Motors will cease operations by month's end, putting 200 people out of work.

Workers at CRS-Gastonia learned last week about the pending layoffs and 10 administrative employees were let go Friday, said Mary Ryan, vice president of Aftermarket Technology Corp., CRS's Westmont, Ill.-based parent company.

"Obviously, we feel pretty heartsick about it, but there's not much we can do," Ryan said. GM will send the work to other suppliers, but she's not sure whether they include any of the company's other locations in Missouri, Oklahoma and the United Kingdom....
