Continental raises frequent flier upgrade fees.

Sep. 15--Continental Airlines said Tuesday it is raising the fees it charges to frequent fliers who buy discount tickets and then pay to upgrade to "BusinessFirst" cabins when space is available.

The fee hikes of $50 or $100 per upgrade start Jan. 1 and are meant to offset falling international fares, said company spokeswoman Julie King.

BusinessFirst customers get concierge service, better food, more spacious and luxurious seating, and more inflight entertainment choices, she said.

Since summer vacation travel demand has dropped off, airlines have been slashing prices on some routes over the Atlantic, she said.
