Standard & Poor's raises ratings on health insurer Anthem.

Sep. 16--Standard & Poor's raised its credit and financial strength ratings on Anthem Inc.'s operating subsidiaries to A from A Wednesday, both in the "strong" range, and said the rating outlook is stable.

S&P also affirmed its BBB (adequate) credit rating for the parent company, Anthem Inc., and changed its outlook to positive from stable.

S&P said it raised ratings for the operating companies because the business continues to "achieve strong, stable returns on an increasingly diverse business mix." The decision is not related to the planned merger with WellPoint Health Networks Inc., the ratings agency said.
