Sep. 17--Minnesota Power Co. expects regional electrical demand to grow at an average annual rate of 1.7 percent for the next decade, according to a report filed Wednesday with the Minnesota Public Utilities Commission.
"We are banking on some growth in the commercial and residential sector and some of the more certain industrial expansions happening," said David McMillan, senior vice president of marketing and public affairs for Allete, parent company of the Duluth-based utility.
Industry consumes about two-thirds of Minnesota Power's electricity.
Until 2009, the utility will meet growing demand by short-term power purchases from other suppliers. For the 2009-2019...
