U.K. firm Cable & Wireless to join BT telephone exchange.

Sep. 17--Cable & Wireless will spend up to UKpound 85 million to install its own equipment in 400 of BT's telephone exchanges over the next year as the battle to offer high-speed internet access hots up.

Chief executive Francesco Caio reckons controlling the copper wire that feeds into homes and businesses could generate annual revenues of UKpound 250 million within four years. But he refused to say if the strategy would stop the fall in revenues at its restructuring UK arm.

After BT was forced to cut access charges, C&W (1 1/2 pence down at 110 pence) says it can break even by attracting 12 business or 60 residential customers per exchange.
