New owners plan renovation of Oklahoma City plaza for offices, retail.

Sep. 17--J. Edgar Hoover was head of the FBI when Shartel Plaza was developed -- and that's more than just a time-worn way to pinpoint the shopping center's place in history.

The FBI was one of the first tenants. A room-size safe on the second floor of one building stored high powered weaponry and, presumably, if agents wanted to make a federal case out of something, the evidence with which to do so.

Old days come to mind in a second at the shopping center-office complex, which straddles Shartel Avenue just north of NW 50. Think late 1950s, when the complex was started, to the early 1960s, when it was completed.
