Retailers start to ship out their holiday catalogs.

Sep. 21--Today marks the official start of autumn, but for catalog merchants, time is already running out until Christmas.
Holiday catalogs began arriving in mailboxes as early as last week, giving consumers barely a moment to catch their breath from the back-to-school blitz of catalogs and promotions. One of the early birds was outdoor clothier and veteran cataloger L.L. Bean.
"It certainly seems like the shopping season is getting longer," said Melissa Dowling, executive editor of Catalog Age, a magazine for direct marketers.
