Kirkland, Wash., misses bus on transit center idea.

Sep. 21--Kirkland leaders have just three months to come up with a new plan for a downtown transit center after several options apparently have fallen through.

The latest blow came this week in a staff report that concludes building a new city hall above the transit center would be prohibitively expensive. The city-hall idea surfaced this summer as a possible answer to the city's increasing need for office space as it contemplates annexing large areas to the north.

Kirkland leaders have long wanted a transit center with about eight bus bays, shelter and seating at 424 Kirkland Ave., the former site of a hardware store. They envisioned that some kind of development...
