Sep. 23--It was a brief flash of skin, a blink-and-you'd-miss-it pop-culture moment.

Depending on your perspective, it either livened up what had been, up to that point, another dull Super Bowl or signaled the further decline of Western civilization.

It was Janet Jackson's breast, laid mostly bare by singer Justin Timberlake, who tore off a piece of Jackson's costume in front of about 90 million viewers. It was, participants insisted in statements that didn't entirely match, a mistake.
