Weight-loss surgery gains momentum in Portland, Ore.

Sep. 27--The Portland area's two largest centers for weight-loss surgery are rapidly expanding their practices to treat a growing number of obese patients.
Legacy Health System and Oregon Health & Science University are hiring more clinicians to treat morbid obesity, augmenting space devoted to the surgery, centralizing obesity treatment services and laying out more marketing money.
The Portland-based health systems are responding to an obesity epidemic. The combination of obesity and poor fitness is expected soon to surpass smoking as the leading preventable cause of death in the United States. One-fifth of Oregon adults are estimated to be obese....
