Thirteenth recipient of Danvers, Mass., firm's artificial heart dies.

Sep. 28--The 13th patient to receive the world's first fully implantable artificial heart died Sunday night after an unexpected malfunction in the device made by Abiomed Inc. of Danvers, company officials said yesterday.

The company yesterday sent a team to investigate the death of Don Graham, 73, who received the plastic-and-titanium heart on May 3 at Jewish Hospital in Louisville, Ky. A spokesman last night said neither Abiomed nor the surgeons at Jewish Hospital know exactly what killed Graham, and an autopsy is planned.
