American Airlines to test portable entertainment systems for passengers.

Sep. 29--American Airlines Inc. will begin testing a portable in-flight entertainment system that would allow passengers to browse electronic newspapers, listen to music or watch movies.

With the hand-held devices, available starting in November, the Fort Worth-based carrier hopes to boost revenue and improve the in-flight experience of passengers.

"This would allow us to give our customers entertainment options faster and more economically than if we were to modify the aircraft," said Mary McKee, the airline's managing director of in-flight products.

American is the latest airline to test new types of in-flight entertainment systems.
