Colleges save money by adding payment, banking features to student ID cards.

Sep. 30--Whenever Bijal Valia wants, she can swipe her University of Houston identification card in a campus vending machine to buy a soda.

If she needs to do late-night studying, she uses her Cougar OneCard for library access. And with the card accepted at any store that takes MasterCard, it's good for groceries, CDs or anything else the college sophomore might need.

"I love my Cougar card," said Valia, whose ID card is attached to a free checking account.
