Japan agency raids 40 firms over bid-rigging in bridge-construction orders.

Oct. 5--TOKYO -- The Fair Trade Commission on Tuesday searched about 40 firms including Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ltd. and Kawasaki Heavy Industries Ltd. on suspicion of rigging bids to win steel bridge construction orders from the central and local governments.

Also raided were Ishikawajima-Harima Heavy Industries Co., Mitsui Engineering & Shipbuilding Co., Nippon Steel Corp., Hitachi Zosen Corp., Sumitomo Heavy Industries Ltd., JFE Engineering Inc. as well as the Japan Association of Steel Bridge Construction, sources close to the FTC said.
