Oct. 3--QUESTION: I have a credit card from Halifax which I pay off each month by direct debit. Recently, the direct debit was not collected and I was charged UKpound 25 for late payment, plus interest.

Halifax said my direct debit had been cancelled. My bank, Lloyds TSB, confirmed that it had not been cancelled and I gave Halifax this confirmation.

However, my card has now been declined at a restaurant, so I have sent Halifax a cheque to clear my account, but I have not included the penalty or interest and I am afraid my credit rating may be damaged.

ANSWER: In any huge organisation, things go wrong sometimes, so I try to judge companies...
