Oct. 10--Mergers ride high on the business agenda, as established companies struggle for growth in a slow economy and startups scramble for an exit strategy in a weak market for initial public offerings.

Yet many companies can't get mergers right, said David Harding, a director in the Boston office of consultants Bain & Co.

"Most companies need to be doing deals in order to be successful," Harding said. "If you're Michael Dell and you've got Dell Computer, then by all means grow organically.
