Firefox web browser may make a dent in Microsoft's Internet Explorer monopoly.

Oct. 12--There's a fox nipping at Microsoft's heels.

A new Web browser, called Firefox 1.0, introduced by the upstart Mozilla Foundation in September, is showing signs that it could make a dent in the near monopoly that Microsoft's Internet Explorer has carved out.

It's hardly a browser war, but for the first time in years, consumers are actively turning to a free alternative to Internet Explorer, with Firefox wracking up more than 1 million downloads in the first week following its release.

"We're ecstatic with the results we've gotten from the preview version," says Bard Decrem, a Mozilla spokesman.
