High cost of business logos on Virginia highways may be a bad sign.

Oct. 13--There will be fewer gas-station logos on Virginia highway signs after this month.
Motorists depend on the logos to find exits with close-by gas, food and lodging -- and restrooms.
But some business owners say they can no longer afford the signs.
Businesses are being asked to pay $2,500 for logos at most interchanges under a fee increase approved by the Commonwealth Transportation Board.
It's the second price increase in four years, a 233-percent jump from the amount the businesses were paying for logo signs in 2000. Several operators are deciding not to pay it.
