Nevada utilities commission could double proposed hike in natural gas rates.

Oct. 12--After hearing a three-way debate over procedural law Monday, the presiding officer for a Southwest Gas Corp. rate case ruled he would consider a proposal that could double the size of a natural-gas rate increase this winter.

The staff of the Public Utilities Commission, which participates as an independent body in rate cases, urged the commission last month to raise Southwest Gas rates by 9.25 percent in Southern Nevada, rather than the 5 percent the company proposed.

If adopted by the three-member commission, the staff's recommendation would raise the typical residential customer's gas rates in Southern Nevada by $6.12 to $74.16 starting Dec. 1....
