Microsoft to open online music store in Japan.

Oct. 13--Microsoft Corp. will open an online music store in Japan on Oct. 20 with an initial catalogue of 50,000 tracks of music, officials of the U.S. software giant's Japanese unit said Tuesday.

The MSN Music store's catalogue will become "one of the largest services" of its kind in Japan as it will be expanded to more than 100,000 tracks by the end of this year, a Microsoft Co. official said.

Offering music from Toshiba-EMI Ltd. and other major record companies, Microsoft will charge 158 to 367 yen per song and 1,300 to 2,200 yen an album.
