Oct. 15--Shares of America West Holdings and ATA Holdings both rose Thursday following a report that the Tempe-based parent company of America West Airlines is negotiating to purchase all or part of ATA.
The Wall Street Journal reported America West's interest in Indianapolis-based ATA, the parent of ATA Airlines, a struggling carrier hurt by soaring fuel costs and high debts to acquire new airplanes.
Questions about ATA's future have been swirling since August when the carrier said it could run out of cash early next year and might be forced to sell assets. In addition to America West, speculation has centered on Southwest Airlines and AirTran Airways as...
