Oct. 20--Consumers no longer have to fork over $1.25 or more for directory assistance, as a host of free alternatives are emerging, including a new service to be announced today.
Upsnap (upsnap.com) will allow cell phone users to send a request for a business or residential listing via a cellular phone text message that includes the city, zip code, area code or airport code and the name of the person or business, the company is expected to announce today. Upsnap will then send the phone number within 10 seconds.
At home, consumers can also get free directory assistance via Optimum Voice, Cablevision's telephone service.
