Oct. 20--TOKYO -- Toshiba Corp. plans to release laptop computers equipped with next-generation DVD drives at the end of next year, the Nihon Keizai Shimbun reported Wednesday.

This is the first time that a major personal computer maker has revealed details of a product that is compatible with one of the next-generation DVD formats, the report said, adding that Toshiba's new laptops will play regular DVDs and compact discs in addition to HD-DVD discs.

Toshiba plans to release the new PCs in December 2005 under its Qosmio brand and aims to ship 1 million units of the HD-DVD laptops in the first year, the report said.
