American Airlines may lay off up to 1,100 workers.

Oct. 23--American Airlines Inc. will furlough up to 450 pilots and up to 650 mechanics as part of a restructuring announced this week that will shrink the carrier's schedule.
The reductions were disclosed Friday in an internal airline memo.
American spokeswoman Sonja Whitemon declined to comment on potential cuts.
Furloughs are an inevitable product of less flying, and American said Wednesday it plans to fly about 5 percent less domestically in the first quarter of next year, as measured by available seat miles.
