Oct. 30--RAMALLAH, West Bank -- Long before he left for medical treatment in France, Yasser Arafat had all but vanished from the streets of downtown Ramallah.

Four years ago, when the Palestinian uprising was gathering force and Arafat still traveled freely, the pale stone walls of this city's main mosque were plastered with posters of the man Palestinians called simply "the president."
