Oct. 31--The format of choice for home video cameras is MiniDV; expect to pay between $700 and $1,000 for a new camcorder.

Other recording formats are available -- Digital 8, MicroMV, and even cameras that record directly to DVDs or to flash memory cards. But MiniDV is the market king and thus has the most accessories and options available. It also gives you digital quality, low price and reusable 60-minute tapes.

If you buy a major brand of camcorder, chances are you won't be disappointed.

Sony, Canon, JVC and Panasonic lead the pack, and all make quality products.
