Global smart-card leader Oberthur seeks opportunities in Thai market.

Nov. 3--Oberthur Card Systems, a global leader in smart cards for the financial services and telecoms industries, has set up a local office with the aim of taking a leading role in the Thai market.

The company is a bidder in the second phase of the government's ID chip card project, an initiative to replace 26 million national ID cards with embedded-chip smart cards.

Pierre Barberis, chief executive officer of Oberthur Card Systems, said the company was also interested in the government's e-passport project, estimated to involve up to seven million passports.
