Air Berlin spurns Boeing for first time.

Nov. 5--Not long ago Boeing could boast that nearly every jet sold to a low-cost carrier was a 737.

But as Airbus has done in one segment of the airplane market after another, Boeing's European rival has aggressively marketed its family of A320 single-aisle jets to discount airlines and undermined Boeing's claims of supremacy.

The latest Airbus coup came yesterday, when Air Berlin ended one of the year's longest sales competitions by placing a firm order for 70 Airbus A320s, plus options for 40 more jets. Air Berlin currently has an all-Boeing fleet.

Ten of the firm orders will go to Niki, a low-cost airline based in Austria owned by Formula One...
