Amarillo, Texas, mercury collection efforts continue with 275 pounds turned in.

Nov. 11--After an initial deluge, Amarillo's mercury collection campaign has slowed to a trickle.

But the effort continues through the end of the month.

"There was a big surge the first five days or so," said Capt. Bob Johnson of the Amarillo Fire Department. "But people who were going to turn it in did, and the others either didn't have any or weren't interested to start with."

To date, the community has submitted about 275 pounds of mercury since the city and Environmental Protection Agency began the drive about a month ago, said Duree Duke, environmental health director for the city.

"Amarillo citizens were very responsive," she said....
