British regulator Ofcom threatens to investigate British Telecom.

Nov. 19--BT has been given 10 weeks to come up with new ways of giving rivals fair access to its telephone network or it could face a "disruptive" probe that may lead to its break-up.

Telecoms regulator Ofcom got tough with the former monopoly in the latest stage of its telecoms industry review, saying it must make "substantive behavioural and organisational changes" to how it sells internet and telephone access to the likes of Cable & Wireless and AOL.

If BT delivers, its reward is less red tape and fewer stringent price controls.

But if its proposals next February do not go far enough, Ofcom boss Stephen Carter could bring in the Competition Commission...
