The Hartford Courant, Conn. Knight Ridder/Tribune Business News

Nov. 25--Standard & Poor's this week raised its credit and financial strength ratings on Aetna, citing the company's "significantly improved management culture, strong overall business position, and very strong operating performance." The ratings were raised on Aetna's main subsidiaries to A from A-, both in the "strong" category. S&P also raised the credit rating on Aetna Inc., the parent company, to BBB from BBB, both in the "adequate" range.

S&P expects Aetna's pre-tax operating earnings, before realized investment gains and losses, to be about $1.7 billion for full-year 2004 and about 15 percent higher in 2005.
