Northwest's new CEO sees key role for airline's Memphis, Tenn., hub.

Dec. 3--New Northwest Airlines CEO Doug Steenland sees Memphis in the carrier's future as "far as the eye can see." But more flight changes are possible as Northwest adjusts to what Steenland calls this "Wal-Mart" discount competition.
"We've made adjustments in the schedule to try to make this work in Memphis," Steenland told The Commercial Appeal editorial board Thursday.
"And there could well be more, but nothing currently is in the works.
"The strength of Memphis is that it allows us to serve a wide quadrant of the country we couldn't otherwise serve," he said.
