Dec. 3--Lisa Ortman of Ortman Family Vineyards often has to tell out-of-state customers they can't buy her wine.
This isn't because the customers are underage or because the San Luis Obispo-based winery sold out of its last bottle. Ortman, director of sales and marketing, has to turn consumers away because of current direct-shipping laws, which forbid wineries from sending wine to certain states.
"We've probably lost a few thousand dollars in sales," Ortman said.
Direct-shipping laws stem from the 21st Amendment, which was approved in 1933 to end Prohibition and allow states to regulate the sale of alcoholic beverages. Though laws...
