Short-sellers bet on U.S. carriers' woes.

Dec. 8--Companies generally like it when their stock is the target of investors -- unless, of course, the investors are betting that the price will go down.

That has been the case this year for Delta Air Lines and AMR Corp., parent of American Airlines, which have been popular with short sellers who think the companies' problems will continue.

Short sellers profit when a stock price goes down. They borrow stock, generally from a broker, sell it, wait for the price to fall, replace the shares with ones they buy at the lower price and pocket the difference. If the price of the stock goes up, however, short sellers lose money.
