Vodafone's new president aims to overtake Japan mobile phone operator KDDI.

Dec. 8--TOKYO -- Shiro Tsuda, new president of Vodafone K.K., said Wednesday he aims to have Japan's third largest mobile phone operator overtake the second largest, KDDI Corp., by accelerating development of its third-generation cellphone operations.

Tsuda, who became president and chief executive officer of Vodafone on Dec. 1, said at a press conference that the number of subscribers to its services began to approach the KDDI total when Vodaphone's "Sha-mail" picture messaging service caught on, but since then the gap has been widening again.
