Dec. 9--TAKEOVER GOSSIP IS MAKING PUNTERS HUNGRY FOR GEEST: Hungry punters licked their lips in anticipation of a 475 million pounds Icelandic bid for Geest before Christmas. Shares of the fresh and ready-prepared food group touched 610 pence before closing 9 pence up at a year's peak of 600 pence on revived gossip that 20 percent shareholder Bakkavor is putting the finishing touches to a mouth-watering 650 pence-a-share offer.

The Icelandic convenience food company, which supplies Tesco, Marks & Spencer, J Sainsbury and Waitrose with chilled ready-meals, bought the rump of its stake in Geest in a 40 million pounds raid in June, paying up to 580 pence a share. Under...
